Artist Statement
Structure and transformation
Tatiana Bakulina explores the relationship between line, material and natural form, using drawing, textile and mixed media to examine transformation, memory and cultural association.
Her practice moves between paper and natural silk. She is interested in the point at which a line ceases to function only as a drawn mark and becomes part of a material surface — absorbed by silk, interrupted by texture, carried by colour or placed in tension with geometric structure.
Natural forms recur throughout the work, particularly botanical and marine environments. Rather than functioning only as subjects, they become structures through which rhythm, transformation and the relationship between organic growth and constructed systems can be explored.
Material is an active part of this process. Silk, paper, dyes, ink, acrylic and relief impose different conditions on an image. Across these processes, the work develops through a continuing dialogue between structure and organic growth, control and uncertainty, image and material.
